Swedish (Relaxation Massage)
The most common type of massage and refers to a collection of techniques designed primarily to relax muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart. Using oil or cream reduces friction.
Swedish massage can relax muscles, increase circulation, remove metabolic waste products in the lymph system, thereby improving the immune functions, helps joint flexibility and movement, and relaxes muscle spasm. It helps the body produce its own natural pain killers (endorphins) to ease pain and soreness. Can stimulate or sedate the nervous system depending on the technique used. Reduces stress and helps the recipient obtain a feeling of connectedness, and a better awareness of their body and the way they use and position it.
One of the primary goals of Swedish massage is to speed venous return from the extremities. Swedish massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissue of lactic acid, uric acid and other metabolic wastes. It improves circulation without increasing heart load. It stretches the ligaments and tendons, keeping them supple. Swedish massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system while at the same time relaxing the nerves themselves.
is a type of massage aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia, also called connective tissue. Deep tissue massage uses many of the same movements and techniques as ,Swedish massage, but the pressure will generally be more intense.
It is also a more focused type of massage, as the therapist works to release chronic muscle tension or knots (also known as "adhesions.")
Will A Deep Tissue Massage Hurt?
It shouldn't hurt, but it's likely to be a bit more uncomfortable than a classic Swedish massage. You should always feel free to speak up if the pressure is too much for you.
How Fast Will I Get Results With A Deep Tissue Massage?
It's important to be realistic about what one massage can achieve. Many people ask for more pressure, thinking that if the therapist just pushes hard enough, they can get rid of all their knots in an hour. This just won't happen. In fact, undoing chronic knots and tension built up over a lifetime is best achieved with an integrated program that includes exercise, work on your posture and ways of moving, relaxation techniques and a regular program of massage.
Finally, while deep tissue is certainly valuable, you should be aware that gentle styles of massage like craniosacral therapy can also produce profound release and realignment in the body.
Combination Massage: A combination of techniques for best results
Thai Massage
An acupressure massage that utilizes stretching and compressions along the specific pathways of the body. This is done over clothes.
Sports Massage Therapy
For the fitness of active people, Sports Massage Therapy is the practical application of kinesiology done in a series of compression and cross fiber techniques to keep the athlete's body in prime working condition. Sports Massage Therapy can be classified into three areas: maintenance, event and rehabilitation.
Maintenance massage helps the athlete reach and maintain peak performance through injury-free training. Maintenance massage increases endurance and greater flexibility while preventing athletic slumps.
Event massage takes place before, during and/or after competition to supplement an athlete's warm-up, readying the athlete for top performance. Event massage helps reduce muscle spasms and metabolic build-up that occur with vigorous exercise. These techniques of event massage enhance the body's recovery process, promotes faster healing of injuries, improves the athlete's return to high-level training and competition, and reduces the risk of injury.
Lymphatic
Also called the Vodder Technique, this is a great immune system booster! Therapists use light touch and repetitive movements to encourage proper drainage of the body's lymph system to reduce swelling caused by water retention.
Reflexology
An ancient healing art that has been known to man for many thousands of years. Reflexology is a science that deals with the principle that there are reflexes in the feet and hands relative to each and every organ and all parts of the body. It is the physical act of applying pressure to the feet with specific thumb and hand techniques without the use of oils, lotions, or tools. Stimulation of these reflexes properly can help many health problems in a natural way. Massaging specific reflex points triggers a reflex action to stimulate various nerves relating to the body part or organ being treated, relaxing tension and helping the body to seek its own equilibrium. This is especially beneficial if you are unable to work directly on an affected area, it is intended to affect the whole body.
